At some point in every photographer’s life, he or she would probably ask, “Why do I photograph? What should I photograph? What do I care most about?” Intimately intertwined with these serious questions are practical considerations such as “Where should I live?”.

Very early in my journey into photography, I came across a newspaper article headlined, “The camera in your hands is not a toy”. In it, the writer proposed that, in the right hands, the camera can be an agent of change. (more…)

Deeply influenced by Eugene Richards’s documentation of his late wife who lost a battle against cancer, and Michael Lutzky’s essay about his dad, I was determined that I needed and could photograph my ill father.

My father passed away Feb 17, 1992, when I was in my final semester at the University of Missouri-Columbia. (more…)

Just like other collectors, those who collect photography books are also familiar with phrases like, ”You should have been here an hour earlier”, ”I just sold a copy last week”, or ”Leave your contact number and I’ll call you when I come across one”.

WHILE most of my schoolmates were busy preparing for the A levels during the last months of my junior college, I remember reading over and over Don McCullin’s book on photography, Hearts Of Darkness. (more…)
