At some point in every photographer’s life, he or she would probably ask, “Why do I photograph? What should I photograph? What do I care most about?” Intimately intertwined with these serious questions are practical considerations such as “Where should I live?”.

Very early in my journey into photography, I came across a newspaper article headlined, “The camera in your hands is not a toy”. In it, the writer proposed that, in the right hands, the camera can be an agent of change. (more…)

Why I Photograph

Deeply influenced by Eugene Richards’s documentation of his late wife who lost a battle against cancer, and Michael Lutzky’s essay about his dad, I was determined that I needed and could photograph my ill father.

[ BOOK LIVES ] What a thrill, finding that rare classic

Just like other collectors, those who collect photography books are also familiar with phrases like, ”You should have been here an hour earlier”, ”I just sold a copy last week”, or ”Leave your contact number and I’ll call you when I come across one”.

WHILE most of my schoolmates were busy preparing for the A levels during the last months of my junior college, I remember reading over and over Don McCullin’s book on photography, Hearts Of Darkness. (more…)

The Importance of Having An ISBN

The best thing about self-publishing is that I got to learn about the book business first hand. Sure, I made my fair share of mistakes but overall, I gained more than what I had put in, and have been able to use my new knowledge to help others.

Back in the days when having a personal Wikipedia mention gave a photographer bragging rights, two good friends created a Wiki entry for me on my birthday. (more…)

When it comes to my own books, the decision-making was a lot easier. First, I just want to be very far away from people who don’t like it.

We held a ‘board’ meeting at our new home early this afternoon and decided, on a vote of 2-0, that if we were to move again in future, we will hire professionals to pack and unpack everything. (more…)
