The Kindness of Others

Another great thing that I learned: The Singapore Cancer Society provides free and regular house calls, and the head of that service actually visited her today. Dr Rina Nga and nurse Suhaila spent close to two hours finding out about her condition, examining her, talking to my siblings and me, and gave her additional medicine. I told the doctor that I would be happy to contribute some time and skills to them. Will follow up.

The wait to see a doctor can drag for hours and Mom was always getting tired and hungry easily. The nurses at the centre actually gave my family a consultation room to rest and wait and they told my nephew that he can perhaps aspire to be a doctor.

There are many ‘alternatives’ if you bother asking and hopefully asking the right person. For example, I now know that instead of going to the hospital for the blood test and wait another three hours for the doctor to see her, Mom could opt to do the test a few days before at the nearby polyclinic.

My nephew Boon Yi was on school holiday that week and spent every single day with Mom. The nurses at the centre actually gave my family a consultation room to rest and wait and they told him that he can perhaps aspire to be a doctor.
