Mom

Together, Again

[ 29 APR 2015 ]

After living ‘apart’ for 24 years, Mom and Dad are reunited today as we brought them to their new house in Mandai. As Dad was a Taoist/Buddhist and Mom a Christian, we invited a pastor and a guru to perform the rites.

This simple ceremony is even more significant for me as it is the first time that I have seen and touched Dad’s ashes. I was studying in the USA when he died in 1992 and was not able to come home for his funeral so for many years, it was difficult for me to accept that my father had passed away.

Today, I finally have closure.

In my brother’s right hand, wrapped in the red cloth, is Dad’s urn, which we had exhumed early this morning from Mount Vernon. Dad stayed there since February 1992 and Mom was a regular visitor. In the white box is Mom’s ashes.

When Dad was cremated 24 years ago, the niche was registered in the name of Uncle Peng (right), my Dad’s youngest brother.

My eldest sister, who did the honor on behalf of all of us, was there day and night during both my parents’ periods of illness. She always told me that Dad was in much more pain than Mom and I am eternally grateful that she and my other family members held the fort so I could complete my university education in Missouri.

My brother gladly offered his calligraphy skill when it was time to write them names.

A Taoist guru called Bernard and a Methodist pastor called Thomas blessed Mom’s and Dad’s new house.
