Although she was easily irritated by noise after beginning her radiation therapy, Mom insisted that my cousins’ five children join us for the annual feast.

Because of her unstable condition, we changed our reunion dinner plans a few times. Usually we would eat with immediate families and a few of our good friends. In the end, we had to un-invite three of them, who totally understood, and had a simple steamboat meal with Uncle Peng’s family.

Tired from the RT and medication, Mom dozed off at her usual spot in the living room. Always feeding everyone first in the past years, she would always eat last, saying that the soup was tastier after a while and that she could eat more that way.
