In Singapore for a visit for the past four days, Mr. Yoshishige Hayashi, director of Hibiki-no-Sato Convalescent Home in Tenri City, and his wife, prayed over my mom at the hospital every day. Mr Hayashi, a Paris Conservatory-trained musician, was my brother’s music teacher when he was studying in Japan.

My brother made arrangements, including accommodation through Mr Hayashi’s network, when he heard that Mom wanted to visit Hokkaido and to see sakura. Unfortunately, she didn’t get well enough to make the trip. One other thing I learned: cancer patients don’t take to pollen well. If you visit anyone at Ward 48, you will be told not to bring fresh flowers.

In the afternoon, physiotherapist Samantha Tong took Mom for a walk around the ward, and encouraged her to use a walking stick at home but Mom flatly refused because she feels ‘paiseh’.

I left Mom alone for less than five minutes after her exercise to buy her a cup of soya milk and she already made a new friend in Ms Diamond Goh, a single mother from Ipoh. The self-professed singer and dancer told Mom that she hopes to enter the Most Beautiful Mom contest soon, now that her three children are all gainfully employed. In her own words, Ms Goh said her youngest daughter, a graphic designer, is “beautiful, like a model”.
