Two days ago, Mom told a pastor who visited her that she wants to become a Christian. To make sure she was not saying it under the influence of too much drugs, I volunteered to verify with her yesterday. I asked her, “What did you tell the pastor?” She replied, “I said I want to follow my son.” I asked, “You have two sons. Which one?” She held my hands, pointed to my brother, and then started smiling pleasingly. To make sure she was sure and not lying, I told her I needed to ask more questions to avoid misunderstanding. So I asked, “Where do you hide your money?” She laughed, “Where got money?” Now how not to smile right?

I am a baptized and confirmed Catholic who doesn’t go to church; my brother a staunch Christian; my two sisters Taoists/Buddhists. When it comes to Mom’s choice, we all agree that she can choose anything, as long as she is happy. A few days ago, to make sure she was sure about her previous decision, I asked her again.
She told me, “I want to follow your brother. He is the eldest son, it is the right thing to do.” I reminded her that being a Christian cannot just be about following her son. She replied, “50% to follow him, 50% I believe.”
When I informed my siblings, my second sister gave her full blessing, and said that whatever she decides is what matters most. “She doesn’t need a profound reason for doing it.”
This evening, with the help of Pastor Joseph Ang, Mom was baptized.
